More than 180 companies that own or plan to install energy storage systems (BESS) have expressed interest in the Economic Dispatch Platform for energy storage facilities developed by JSC «Market Operator» for arbitrage on the day-ahead market (DAM) and the intraday market (IDM), and are actively participating in testing the Platform’s functionality. In total, more than 240 companies have registered for testing, indicating growing interest in modern tools for managing energy assets.
The Economic Dispatch Platform for BESS of JSC «Market Operator» enables companies to effectively implement arbitrage strategies on the DAM and IDM—submitting bids to purchase electricity (charging the storage system) during periods of the lowest prices and selling it (discharging the system) during peak demand hours. This creates new opportunities to enhance the economic efficiency of BESS operations.
Platform users are offered two convenient approaches to planning arbitrage on the DAM and IDM, with the identification of the lowest- and highest-priced hours:
These tools enable companies to determine the most advantageous periods for charging electricity and its subsequent sale, thereby optimizing their operational strategies.
Acting CEO of JSC «Market Operator», Oleksandr Havva, during the presentation of the Platform’s updated functionality to members of the Ukrainian Solar Energy Association, noted that the company had conducted an assessment of the operational potential of BESS in the electricity market, which has been published on its official website.
In the near future, it is planned to publish an addendum to this study based on an analysis of DAM prices for 2025. It will present the results of modeling arbitrage strategies for various BESS configurations, including the ratio of power capacity to energy capacity.
According to him, the commonly used market ratio of power to energy capacity of 1:2 is not optimal. Based on the analysis of DAM prices over the past two years, configurations of 1:3 or even 1:4 appear to be more efficient, opening up additional opportunities to increase profitability. “Our calculations are based on data from the previous two years, which were formed under conditions of specific market volatility that may change as the share of BESS and overall competition increase,” emphasized Oleksandr Havva.
The Economic Dispatch Platform for BESS of JSC «Market Operator» is designed for companies seeking to operate independently in the market and make informed decisions based on high-quality analytics and forecasting. At present, it is not intended for those planning to operate in the ancillary services market.
JSC «Market Operator» will continue to develop digital tools aimed at increasing transparency, efficiency, and competitiveness of the Ukrainian electricity market.
Testing of the Economic Dispatch Platform is free of charge. To gain access, registration via the provided link is required.
