“GREEN+”: AN EXTENDED COURSE BY JSC “MARKET OPERATOR” FOR COMPANIES WORKING WITH RES AND BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS (BESS)

25.11.2025

JSC “Market Operator” has updated its educational Programme aimed at raising awareness of the functioning of the electricity market and introduced an extended course “Green+”, designed for companies working with modern flexibility technologies — in particular, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

Participants of the course received an in-depth analysis of the current state of renewable energy development in Ukraine and its role in the electricity market — in particular in the context of the feed-in tariff, the PSO mechanism, and the functioning of balancing groups. This enables producers and traders to better understand economic models, regulatory requirements, and practical opportunities for integrating RES into the market.

The updated package also focuses on an expanded analysis of market opportunities for BESS, the role of such systems in balancing the power system, licensing requirements, and participation in organised market segments.

What’s new in “Green+”?

Participants of the Programme will gain a comprehensive understanding of:

  • how BESS operate — their technical characteristics, types (lithium-ion, flow, mechanical systems, etc.), advantages and limitations;

  • the role BESS play in the market — from peak-load shifting to participation in the Day-Ahead Market (DAM), the Intraday Market (IDM), and the Balancing Market (BM);

  • how pricing for BESS is formed, and which economic, technical and regulatory factors influence the profitability of such projects;

  • licensing and metering requirements that BESS operators must comply with;

  • new opportunities for businesses — participation in bilateral contracts, provision of ancillary services, participation in auctions, import/export operations and backup supply.

BESS — a key to flexibility and new market opportunities

Modern Battery Energy Storage Systems open fundamentally new models of operation for Ukrainian companies:

  • rapid response to load changes — BESS can react within milliseconds;

  • reduction of imbalances thanks to controlled charge/discharge;

  • participation in the balancing market and provision of ancillary services;

  • creation of individual trading strategies on DAM and IDM;

  • backup supply and support for critical consumers.

“Green+” enables companies to develop a deep understanding of how to turn BESS into an effective tool for planning, optimisation and business development. The updated package combines advanced analytics, real market cases and expert explanations of regulatory requirements. This approach allows participants not only to understand the rules of the market, but also to develop their own operational and trading strategies, minimise risks and increase efficiency.

Programme Packages

The Programme for raising awareness of the functioning of the electricity market of Ukraine is delivered in the format of a professional intensive course — from theory to real cases — and includes the following packages:

  • “Market Model” — a basic course for understanding the logic of the power system, market segments (DAM, IDM, BÑM, BM), price formation and electricity trading principles.

  • “Green+” — dedicated to the operation of RES producers and BESS, conditions of electricity sale under different scenarios, and prospects of RES integration into the market.

  • “Distributed Generation” — focusing on local generation development, balancing mechanisms, participation of small producers in the market, and technical aspects of system integration.

  • “Balancing Market and Producers” — detailed information on market opportunities specifically for producers, required actions for system balancing, commands, settlements and interaction within the balancing market.

The Programme carries not only an educational but also an important social mission: all funds received from participation are directed by JSC “Market Operator” to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Thus, each participant contributes to strengthening Ukraine’s energy and defence resilience by combining professional development with support for the front.
